The Hardmoors 55 starts at Helmsley and follows the beautiful Hardmoors110/Cleveland Way route towards Guisborough. It passes over the crest of the North York Moors and the Cleveland Hills taking in Roseberry Topping before reaching the finish at the Market town of Guisborough. The race covers over 2,000m (6,562 ft) of ascent. This year’s race caused some controversy as around 100 runners needed locating and rescuing in blizzard conditions, 30 of which were treated for hypothermia. Around 300 runners set off from Helmsley around 9am on Saturday morning to run the 55 miles to Guisborough. As the wintery weather closed in during the evening and a number of cases of hypothermia were developing the event was called off at Kildale. Garth De Roux had fortunately finished the race in a time of 11:21:30 and in 38th place. 162 runners completed the race. An amazing feat in those conditions. Well done Garth!
